29-year-old William Donaldson Correctional Facility inmate died over the weekend
An inmate at William Donaldson Correctional Facility died over the weekend after he was found unresponsive in his cell.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Gerald Denorch Cochran Jr. He was 29 and from Dothan.
Cochran was serving time at the western Jefferson County prison for convictions of burglary, assault, and possession of a controlled substance out of Houston County in 2014.
Corrections officers performing a routine safety check found Cochran unresponsive at 11:55 p.m. on Friday. He was pronounced dead at the facility at 12:14 a.m. Saturday.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy showed no evidence of trauma or foul play. The cause of his death is pending additional laboratory studies.
Cochran is the 17th inmate to die at Donaldson this year. In 2022, 40 inmates died at the prison.
