Ernie Johnson thanks Charles Barkley, reflects on broadcasting hall of fame induction
Hearing he was headed to the broadcasting hall of fame, Ernie Johnson said hearing it from Charles Barkley made it even better.
Both were on the call of “The Match,” the made-for-TV golf match between Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce against Golden State Warriors teammates Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, on Thursday.
“To have my brother Charles drop this on me made it even more special,” Johnson tweeted. “Sorry, I can’t reply to all who sent their congrats, but I am so thankful for each. I’ve long spoken about the “blackberry moments”—sweet and unexpected moments that make life extraordinary. This was one.”
Barkley dropped the news Thursday in the middle of the broadcast.
“This is big,” Barkley said. “I’m the only one person up here that knows this. I want to be the first person — it’s an honor and a privilege — to congratulate Ernie Johnson going into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.”
A stunned Johnson responded, “Get out of here. Chuckster what are you talking about?
“Man, that is awesome. Thank you so much.”
Johnson goes on to say he is “humbled beyond words” and appears to hold back some tears.
