Fiery crash on I-65 in Hoover leaves 1 dead
One person was killed in a predawn fiery crash on Interstate 65 in Hoover.
Police received a 911 call just before 4:30 a.m. Saturday on a report of a two-vehicle wreck on I-65 just before the Interstate 459 interchange, said Capt. Keith Czeskleba.
Officers arrived to find a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro and a 1970s model Ford Maverick both fully engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Maverick was trapped inside the burning vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Czeskleba said the driver of the Camaro sustained minor injuries that did not require hospitalization.
Although the investigation is in its early stages, he said, it appears the Maverick was traveling at a very low rate of speed or was stopped on the interstate when it was struck in the rear by the Camaro.
I-65 South was shut down for a few hours but is now reopened.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is working to identify the driver of the Maverick.
