President Biden to pursue new student debt relief effort

Hours after the Supreme Court rejected President Joe Biden’s initial effort to forgive student debt for millions of Americans, the White House launched a new effort to pursue broad debt relief.

The U.S. Department of Education will begin the regulatory process to enact debt relief under the Higher Education Act, the administration announced Friday. A committee will begin hearings in July.

In a statement, Biden said he hopes to provide debt relief “to as many borrowers as possible, as quickly as possible.”

The effort is likely to again come under harsh political and legal scrutiny.

Supreme Court justices ruled Friday that the HEROES Act, the initial rationale cited by the Biden administration for its authority to forgive student debt, did not apply to the issue.
