Alabama DL in transfer portal after reported altercation with coach
An Alabama defensive lineman may be looking for a new home. Redshirt junior Jamil Burroughs is reportedly in the transfer portal, multiple outlets confirmed on Friday afternoon.
Burroughs appeared in 20 games across three seasons after being a four-star prospect out of Powder Springs, Ga. He recorded seven solo tackles with two sacks, including two half sacks last year against Mississippi State and Auburn.
Entering the summer, Burroughs was expected to be a part of the Crimson Tide’s 2023 defensive line rotation, but Burroughs’ status came into question two weeks ago. Rivals’ Tony Tsoukalas reported Burroughs had been in a physical altercation with Alabama director of player development Josh Chapman.
Burroughs had a chance to be kicked off the team, according to Tsoukalas. Burroughs’ roster page on Alabama’s team site stayed up. Joe Cook of Inside Texas first tweeted that Burroughs was in the transfer portal.
Burroughs will be ineligible to play in the upcoming season after missing the April 15-30 window unless the NCAA grants him a waiver.
Six players have left Alabama since the Tide’s season ended with a Sugar Bowl blowout over Kansas State. Burroughs would be the fourth defender and first defensive lineman to depart.
Alabama welcomed two interior defensive linemen from its latest recruiting class: James Smith and Edric Hill. They’ll pair with Anquin Barnes (zero games played), Isaiah Hastings (one), Tim Keenan III (two), Damon Payne Jr. (five), Tim Smith (13) and Jaheim Oatis (12).
