ESPN fires Jeff Van Gundy, Jalen Rose and more as talent cuts continue
The ESPN talent cuts continued Friday as NBA game analyst Jeff Van Gundy, NBA analyst Jalen Rose and NFL analyst Keyshawn Johnson have been let go.
The Post, which reported ESPN is letting go around 20 on-air personalities in an effort to save tens of millions of dollars, broke the Van Gundy news.
Possible replacements for Van Gundy on ESPN’s No. 1 team, per the report, include network candidates JJ Redick, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson.
Show host Max Kellerman was also let go.
“Given the current environment, ESPN has determined it necessary to identify some additional cost savings in the area of public-facing commentator salaries, and that process has begun,” the company said in a statement, per Yahoo!. “This exercise will include a small group of job cuts in the short-term and an ongoing focus on managing costs when we negotiate individual contract renewals in the months ahead. This is an extremely challenging process, involving individuals who have had tremendous impact on our company. These difficult decisions, based more on overall efficiency than merit, will help us meet our financial targets and ensure future growth.”
The cuts are part of the plan by The Walt Disney Co. to lay off thousands of employees – including ESPN as part of a previously announced plan to eliminate 7,000 jobs this year.
The job cuts include entertainment, ESPN, parks, experiences and products. The company previously said that it doesn’t expect the job cuts to impact hourly frontline operations roles at its parks and resorts.
Disney CEO Bob Iger had announced in February that the company was going to cut about 7,000 jobs as part of an ambitious companywide cost-savings plan and “strategic reorganization.” The job cuts amount to about 3% of the entertainment giant’s global workforce.
