Cam Robinson draws a 4-game suspension from the NFL

The NFL is suspending Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson for the first four games of the 2023 regular season for violating the league’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances.

“As a veteran leader in the locker room, I always want to set a good example,” Robinson said in a statement released by the team on Thursday afternoon, “and my actions in this instance are not a reflection of that goal. I apologize to the fans, my coaches and, most importantly, my teammates. It hurts me that I cannot be out there with my brothers at the start of the regular season. I will attack training camp the same way I have for the last six seasons, to make sure I am ready both mentally and physically.”

Reports in April indicated the former Alabama All-American was facing a suspension. Now the length of time that Robinson will be out is known.

Robinson will miss games against the Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons. He will be eligible to return to the lineup on Oct. 8, when Jacksonville plays the Buffalo Bills in London.

Robinson remains eligible for full participation at training camp and in the preseason.

“We are aware of the four-game suspension incurred today by offensive lineman Cam Robinson,” Jacksonville said in a press release. “While we certainly respect the NFL’s ruling and are disappointed with this development, we will support Cam as he works his way through the suspension. We are confident that Cam and our team will rise above this challenge as we collectively move forward.”

Robinson has started at left tackle in the 78 games that he’s played since joining the Jaguars in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Jacksonville already lost its right tackle this offseason when Jawaan Taylor left for the Chiefs as a free agent in March.

After the 2020 season, the Jaguars used their franchise tag on Robinson to keep him out of free agency. They didn’t get a long-term contract extension worked out with him, so after Robinson played 14 games in the 2021 season on the franchise-tag salary of $13.754 million, Jacksonville used its franchise tag on him again last offseason. But this time, the team and the tackle agreed on a long-term contract, and he signed a three-year, $54 million extension one year ago.

The suspension will cost Robinson $3.55 million in salary and nullify the guarantee on any such money remaining on his contract.

Last season, Robinson played nearly every offensive snap for Jacksonville until he suffered a meniscus injury in the Jaguars’ 40-34 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 18. Even without Robinson, Jacksonville won its remaining three regular-season game to capture the AFC South title, then defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 31-30 in the postseason before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20.

Robinson won the Outland Trophy as college football’s best interior lineman in 2016 at Alabama.
