Revelator Coffee employees, metal band take over café after sudden closure

Employees of downtown Birmingham’s Revelator Coffee rebelled against the company by holding a live music show inside the store. The popular coffee shop closed over the weekend without notice to employees or patrons.

Handwritten notices announced that the coffee shop was “closed forever”. The employees thanked customers for their love and support and apologized for the inconvenience. The fliers also included information about employees Venmo and Cash App accounts.

Will Russell, a former barista at the coffee shop, said the staff of Revelator found out about the store closing abruptly via text last Friday night. He said that store management speculated that the store became too expensive to continue to operate.

AL.com has continued to reach out to company officials for comment, but has not received a response.

The next day, the partner of one of the store managers wanted to use the coffee shop to host a benefit concert that would include Russell’s band Apprehend, a Birmingham-based hardcore rock band.

On Saturday night, Russell and his bandmates went into the former Revelator Coffee Shop to prepare for their show. After a few minutes of setting up equipment and doing a sound check, Confusion’s Prince and Wielded Steele, two other rock bands that played alongside Apprehend, started blasting their music. A crowd packed inside the shop while several onlookers gathered to watch from outside.

Russell said the band was able to raise a few hundred dollars that was split among the former employees.

On Sunday, Russell posted videos on Twitter from their show with the caption saying: “We threw a show there last night for them taking our job out from under us.”

The tweet amassed more than 1,000 likes and an outpour of support on the social media post.

One user said, “I am so conflicted between being pissed at the store closing and screwing workers while also feeling hyped at this dope display of solidarity.”

After the show, Russell claims that upper management later complained about missing rugs from the coffee shop, but didn’t acknowledge the mass layoffs or store closure.

According to a tweet from The Valley Labor Report, Alabama’s only union talk radio show, they said a coffeeshop closing without warning is common in the restaurant industry.

Revelator Coffee Company operates a handful of coffee shops across the South. In addition to the location across from McWane Science Center in Birmingham, the website also lists shops in New Orleans and the campus of Birmingham-Southern College. The downtown location was the company’s first, according to its website. It also opened a 15,000-square foot roasting facility in Birmingham in 2015.
