21-year-old indicted in Birmingham shooting that killed 1, wounded 2 including juvenile

The suspect in a 2022 shooting that left one man dead and two others, including a juvenile, injured has been indicted for the crimes.

A Jefferson County grand jury issued the indictments against 21-year-Alphonso David Lockhart III on June 13. Those indictments were made public Tuesday.

Lockhart is charged with murder in the slaying of 25-year-old Charles Edward Smith. He is also charged with two counts of attempted murder for the shooting of a 19-year-old female and a juvenile at the same time.

The shooting happened at 1:44 a.m. Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, in the 2700 block of Jefferson Avenue S.W.

When West Precinct officers arrived at the location, they found Smith had sustained a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Officers learned the other two victims had already been transported by private vehicle to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The gunfire erupted during a gathering at an apartment. No motive has been released.

Smith has been held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond since his arrest on Dec. 27, 2022. A trial date has not yet been set.
