Huntsville family wants to be paid for land taken to build UAH, water system

A Huntsville family wants to be compensated for land they say was stolen from them to help build the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the city’s water system.

Five Jones siblings have enlisted the services of national grassroots organization Where Is My Land in their effort to reclaim or be paid for 10 acres that belonged to their parents that is now part of the UAH campus.

“We’re in the process of looking for a potential legal remedy that still exists for them,” said Kamala Miller-Lester, lead researcher for Where Is My Land. She said her organization and the Joneses want to speak with university officials.

“But that hasn’t really yielded much,” she said.

The siblings’ parents – Willie and Lola Jones – owned about 10 acres of land along Athens Pike – now Holmes Avenue – where the UAH Business Administration building, a parking lot and a duck pond now sit.
