What’s the hottest June temperature in Alabama?

A heatwave is in the forecast for Alabama over the next few days.

The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures to top out in the 100s on Thursday and Friday across a wide area, which could send the heat index as high as 114.

An excessive heat warning was in effect for coastal areas today. Excessive heat watches have also been issued for western parts of the state for Thursday.

Will the upcoming heatwave challenge any temperature records? There’s a chance.

Here are the record highs for Thursday (June 29) and Friday (June 30), according to data from the weather service:

That brings up the question: What is the hottest temperature in Alabama for June?

According to Dr. John Christy, Alabama’s state climatologist and the director of Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Talladega holds the title for hottest temperature in June.

Christy’s records show that Talladega hit 109 degrees on June 28, 1931.

There are several other places just one degree off at 108, according to Christy’s data:

* Greenville: June 28, 1954

* Guntersville: June 17, 2000

* Huntsville: June 29, 1931

* Muscle Shoals: June 26, 1914

* Selma: June 28, 1954

Alabama could see highs above 100 degrees on both Thursday and Friday, and a return to more typical late-June temperatures could take hold by Monday.
