Iconic Birmingham stock avoids dismal day on Wall Street

Most of the companies on our Birmingham and Alabama Stock Report will be thankful this week is finally over.

All but three took losses Friday as Wall Street closed out its worst week in more than a month.

Birmingham-based Vulcan Materials, Louisiana-Pacific Corp. and Nucor were the only ones to see a positive number, gaining .5%, .3% and .3%, respectively.

The losses ranged from .1% — Boeing lost two dimes — to the 6% dropped by Community Health Systems.

Southern States took a 1.9% hit. Medical Properties Trust dropped 1.4%. And Regions lost 1.2%.

As for the overall market, the S&P 500 fell 33.56, or 0.8%, to 4,348.33, pulling back further from last week when it reached its highest level in more than a year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 219.28, or 0.6%, to 33,727.43, and the Nasdaq composite sank 138.09, or 1%, to 13,492.52.
