Tropical Storm Bret weakens, but Cindy is stronger
Tropical Storm Bret continued to weaken as it moved deeper into the Caribbean Sea on Saturday while Tropical Storm Cindy strengthened in the central Atlantic.
Neither storm is a threat to the U.S., and both could fall apart in the next few days, but forecasters will keep an eye on Cindy just in case, according to the National Hurricane Center.
TROPICAL STORM BRET
Bret passed through the Leeward Islands on Friday but has continued to lose steam since then after running into increased wind shear. The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to weaken to a trough of low pressure over the weekend.
All watches and warnings have been dropped for Bret, but it could bring some rough seas to parts of the Caribbean.
As of 4 a.m. CDT Saturday, Tropical Storm Bret was located about 45 miles north-northeast of Aruba and was on a path west at 18 mph.
Bret’s winds had dropped to 45 mph on Saturday morning, the hurricane center said. Forecasters said Bret is expected to dissipate over the central Caribbean tonight or on Sunday.
TROPICAL STORM CINDY
Cindy was still far to the east of Bret on Saturday morning and is forecast to take a path that should steer it northeast of the Lesser Antilles.
The hurricane center said Cindy was stronger on Saturday morning with winds up to 60 mph, but it isn’t forecast to become a hurricane.
There haven’t been any hurricanes so far in the Atlantic basin in 2023.
As of 4 a.m. CDT Saturday, Tropical Storm Cindy was located about 675 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and was tracking to the west-northwest at 15 mph.
There were no watches or warnings in place for Cindy. The storm is forecast to stay on a west-northwest path over the next few days and stay north of the islands.
The hurricane center said gradual weakening is expected into early next week as Cindy runs into increasing wind shear and drier air.
As far as Cindy’s future goes, the hurricane center said some models show the storm dissipating in about five days for now, but some others suggest regeneration could be possible after that.
Forecasters said that scenario doesn’t seem likely but hasn’t ruled it out altogether just yet.
Bret and Cindy are the only two storms in the tropical Atlantic as of Saturday. No other storms are expected to develop in the next week, according to the hurricane center.
The Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and ends on Nov. 30.
