Georgia man swimming with son drowns in Gulf Shores

A 49-year-old Georgia man drowned in the waters off Gulf Shores Thursday evening, according to Baldwin County Coroner Brian Pierce.

Pierce identified the man as William Strozier of Madison, Ga.

Strozier was pulled from the water near the Gulf State Park Pavilion, Gulf Shores Beach Safety Chief Joethan Phillips confirmed to AL.com.

Phillips said Strozier and his son were both in the water when lifeguards arrived, but he was unsure whether both had originally been in the water or Strozier had gone into help his son.

Strozier reportedly tried to assist his son before a third man went in to assist.

Lifeguards began CPR on Strozier and he was transported to the South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Freestanding Emergency Department, where he was pronounced dead at 7:09 p.m., according to Pierce.

Phillips said yellow flags were on Gulf Shores beaches Thursday evening, meaning moderate hazard conditions. Rip currents were present, he said.
