Birmingham companies see gains on down day across state
A relatively flat day on Wall Street did not translate to our Birmingham and Alabama Stock Report as all but six stocks took a loss on Thursday.
Birmingham-based Vulcan Materials was one of the few in the positive, pulling up 1.4%. It is the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates — primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel.
Amazon was the big winner on the day, however, pulling up 4.3%.
Amazon has several operations sites with thousands of employees across Alabama, including Bessemer, Huntsville, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery and Theodore.
Birmingham-area stocks Nucor, Encompass Health and U.S. Steel managed small gains of .9%, .4% and .1%, respectively.
Banking stocks took the worst of it Thursday. ServisFirst, Synovus, Regions and PNC dropped 4.2%, 4%, 3.1% and 2.5%, respectively.
