24-year-old Bessemer man killed in Birmingham shooting that also left woman seriously injured
A 24-year-old has been identified as the man killed in a Birmingham shooting that also left a woman seriously injured.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jarvis Jerome Conley Jr. He lived in Bessemer.
West Precinct officers were dispatched just before 9 p.m. Tuesday to the 900 block of 25th Street S.W. following a ShotSpotter alert indicating that gunfire went off in the area, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
When police arrived on the scene, they found Conley lying unresponsive near a vehicle. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene at 8:59 p.m.
The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital.
A man was killed and a woman was seriously hurt when they were shot during an argument Tuesday night in southwest Birmingham, police said.
Fitzgerald said investigators believe the gunshot victims went to the location and were involved in argument with someone they knew. Shots were fired, and both victims were injured.
There was a heavy police presence on the scene because officers believed the shooter was still in the area. They found the suspect inside a nearby house and took him into custody.
Fitzgerald said detectives will present their investigative findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
Conley is Birmingham’s 61st homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting from an outside law enforcement agency and four others have been ruled justifiable.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 90 homicides, including the 61 in Birmingham.
Anyone with additional information on Conley’s slaying is asked to call Birmingham detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
