A 63-year-old Trussville man, and a 47-year-old Pelham woman with her 19-year-old daughter, all perished in what police say was a DUI-related crash on the Baldwin Beach Express Sunday which also injured four others, including two children.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., a Chevrolet Trailblazer reportedly driven by 60-year-old David Arthur Colburn of Elberta struck the back of a black pickup truck, occupied by Christie Lowe and her daughter, Margaret, according to Robertsdale police.

The collision sent the pickup across the median and into oncoming northbound traffic where it struck a GMC Yukon driven by Daryl Speegle of Trussville.

Lowe and her daughter were pronounced dead at the scene, while Speegle was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The unidentified driver of the pickup and a woman riding with Speegle suffered what were described as critical injuries, while two children in the pickup were also injured.

Colburn has been charged with three counts of manslaughter in the deaths of Speegle, Christie Lowe and Margaret Lowe, as well as DUI. In a bond hearing Monday, bond was set at $160,000 — $50,000 for each manslaughter charge and $10,000 for the DUI.

Colburn, who remained in the Baldwin County Jail as of Tuesday morning, was arrested previously in Baldwin County in 1988, but jail records do not indicate the charge leading to that arrest.
