Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the freedom of some of the last group of enslaved people in the U.S., will be celebrated on Monday, June 19th.
The day – a combination of June and 19 – celebrates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
As a federal holiday, government offices will be closed. Here’s a look at what else is open and closed.
Federal offices – Closed
Alabama State offices – Closed
Municipal offices- Most are closed, check ahead
U.S. Post Offices – Closed, mail will not run
Fed Ex, UPS – Open with normal operations
Banks – Most all are closed
Financial markets – New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq closed
Garbage pickup – Garbage pickup will be delayed a day in most places, check with your provider
Grocery stores – Most open regular hours
Retailers – Most open regular hours
Walmart, Target- Open regular hours
