North Alabama couple arrested after malnourished 9-year-old boy discovered
A man and woman in Colbert County are facing aggravated child abuse charges after authorities discover a malnourished nine-year-old boy.
The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office said Deja-Ariaha Bankhead, 27, and Demariez Lavonski Mitchell, 28, were arrested on an aggravated child abuse charge. They are each being held on $50,000 bond.
According to WAFF, deputies with the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office were called to North Alabama Medical Center Saturday for a 9-year-old boy weighing 37 pounds.
Authorities said the child had bruises on his body, blood coming from his ear and other signs of child neglect. The child was taken to Children’s of Alabama for further treatment.
Bankhead and Mitchell were still at the hospital with two younger children, with the youngest being three months old.
Investigators said the family had been staying in a tent at the Colbert Alloys camping area for about two weeks.
The Colbert County Department of Human Resources has taken custody of the two younger children.
