Jamel Dean wants to wear Creamsicle, Pro Bowl jerseys

Cornerback Jamel Dean signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension in March to stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the former Auburn defensive back doesn’t plan to rest on his money.

“I still believe that there’s still (things) left to accomplish,” Dean said as Bucs concluded their offseason program on Thursday, “so I’m not going to hold back. I still want to improve my game because I still want to get Pro Bowl and All-Pro under my belt, so that’s like my motivation to keep going and get better.”

Dean has increased his number of starts in each season of his career. After starting five games as a rookie, he started seven in 2020, 11 in 2021 and 15 in 2022. He also has started six postseason games for Tampa Bay, including the Buccaneers’ 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7, 2021.

Since Dean joined the Bucs in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, he and Carlton Davis have the most passes defended (interceptions and pass break-ups) of any pair of teammates. Davis has 60, and Dean has 41.

Tampa Bay isn’t the first place that Davis and Dean have been teammates. They met in high school and were on Auburn in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

“It’s so special,” Davis said last week about Dean’s contract. “I’m so happy for him. That’s my guy. Everybody knows the history between me and him. And it’s crazy because when I first met him, who would have thought? Like, who would have thought? It’s hard to put it into words, but I’m happy that he’s back with me and we can continue to bounce off each other and continue to make each other better.

“I think we’ve always been a great tandem, even like back in college, and I think the front office sees that, the coaches see it. Anybody who knows football can see that whenever me and him are side-by-side kicking butt, we do a good job and we got a chance to be a really good team.”

Dean plans to spend most of his summer break working at the team’s facility.

“If they’re still serving food, then most likely I’ll still be here,” Dean said.

But this week, Dean will be on the NFL Players Association’s Player Passport Tour to London and Frankfurt.

The NFLPA said the seven-day trip to the United Kingdom and Germany would allow the eight touring players “to showcase their unique personalities, build personal brands and connect with new fans and businesses, all while capitalizing on the increasing demand in the market for international games.”

The Buccaneers have not announced the schedule for their training camp yet, but Tampa Bay kicks off its three-game preseason on Aug. 11 when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs’ regular-season schedule starts on Sept. 10 with a visit to the Minnesota Vikings.

Dean is particularly looking forward to Tampa Bay’s game on Oct. 15 against the Detroit Lions. The Buccaneers announced they would wear their Creamsicle uniforms for the first time since 2012 when they line up against the Lions.

The uniforms were the Bucs’ original look from 1976 through 1996.

“I’m so excited to wear those,” Dean said. “I’ve been waiting for years to wear them. I’m like, ‘Man, I hope I’m on the team when they bring these jerseys out.’ It’s exciting because once I get it, I’m keeping it forever. No jersey swap. I’m letting everybody know right now, I’m not jersey-swapping.”
