Alabama woman accused of fatally running over another woman in early morning fight, fleeing the scene

An Alabama woman is behind bars after authorities say she fatally ran over another woman during an early-morning argument Thursday.

Just after midnight, Ozark-Dale County E911 dispatched Dale County sheriff’s deputies and Newton police to a report of a pedestrian struck in the 4300 block of County Road 43, said Sheriff Mason Bynum.

When they arrived, they found 39-year-old Ashley Williford had sustained extensive trauma to her torso and lower extremities. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Bynum said investigators determined an altercation had taken place between Williford and 21-year-old Kelsey Tanner. Tanner is accused of the running over Williford and then fleeing.

A lookout bulletin was issued for Tanner and her vehicle. A short time later, a Newton police officer spotted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

Tanner is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injure or death. She was booked into the Dale County Jail at 4:46 a.m. and is awaiting her initial court appear.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those involved,’’ Bynum said.
