Florida man charged in deadly shooting at Gardendale hotel will be held without bond under Aniah’s Law

A Florida man charged with fatally shooting his co-worker during an argument at a Gardendale hotel is back in Alabama and will remain held without bond under Aniah’s Law.

Juan Manuel Mendez-Hornelas, 28, is charged with murder in the Memorial Day slaying of 25-year-old Julio Acosta Garcia of Texas.

Mendez-Hornelas was arrested in Mississippi and returned to Jefferson County several days later.

Jefferson County District Judge Kechia Davis ruled that “no condition or combination of conditions of release will reasonably ensure the defendant’s appearance in court or protect the safety of the community.”

The deadly fight happened before 1 a.m. that Monday at the hotel on Thompson Street.

According to police, the co-workers were from out of state and staying at the hotel when they got into a dispute. The suspect pulled a gun, shot Garcia while they were in the parking lot, and then fled, police said.

Garcia was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officers and detectives quickly identified the suspect. A lookout bulletin was issued over Birmingham area police radios; however, the suspect was captured by Tupelo police officers in Mississippi.

Court documents state two eyewitnesses at the scene identified Mendez-Hornelas as the shooter, and noted the shooting was also captured on surveillance video.

A GoFundMe started by Garcia’s family said he was kind, honest and hardworking.

“He was tragically taken too soon and unfairly,’’ family said in the GoFundMe.
