Mobile couple sues Mississippi coast casino, claiming shuttle van hit man crossing street

A Mobile couple is suing a Mississippi coast casino after the man was struck by a van owned by the casino, claiming negligence by the casino and driver caused the man to suffer significant injuries, according to federal court documents.

Gerald and Malinda LaMay filed suit against Island View Casino in Gulfport last week in U.S. District Court.

In the complaint, which represents only one side of a case, the LaMays say they were provided a complimentary meal on May 5 at the Beach Blvd. Steamer restaurant, owned by Island View and located adjacent to the casino on 33rd Avenue.

After dinner, the LaMays left the restaurant to walk back to the casino, where they were staying. While crossing 33rd Avenue, Gerald LaMay was struck by a Ford van used as a casino shuttle and driven by Island View employee Karen Monroe, according to the filing. Monroe is also listed as a defendant in the suit.

A Mobile couple has filed a lawsuit against Island View Casino in Gulfport, Miss., after a casino van struck the man as they crossed 33rd Street on May 5.

The LaMays’ suit claims Gerald LaMay suffered “multiple broken ribs, lacerated liver, pleural effusion (buildup of fluid between the layers of tissue that line the lungs and chest cavity), and other significant and permanent injuries.”

The suit seeks unspecified damages for Gerald LaMay’s injuries, along with medical expenses; pain, suffering and mental anguish; loss of consortium and other household services; and other damages which may be shown at trial.

In addition to the casino owners and Monroe, the suit also lists five John Does as defendants to represent others who could be culpable, including other Island View employees; Ford Motor Co.; those who supplied the equipment or tires for the van; and anyone else who may have been involved.

Island View and the other defendants have 21 days to file a response to the LaMays’ complaint. As of Thursday morning, no responses had been received by the court.
