Level 2 risk for more severe storms Tuesday in Alabama

Yet another round of strong to severe storms will be possible in Alabama today (Tuesday). And there could be even more on Wednesday, according to forecasters.

And some of those storms could bring big hail along with them.

The unsettled weather pattern that has brought several days of severe weather to Alabama is expected to continue for at least the next two days.

Multiple rounds of storms (as many as four) could bring wind gusts up to 60 mph, large hail, lightning and heavy rain along with them, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain could be heavy enough to lead to localized flash flooding as well.

The weather service said storms will be likely from later this morning through the afternoon, especially across the southern part of the state. Then another wave of storms will be possible later tonight that could affect areas farther to the north.

Both waves could generate storms with large hail and damaging winds — especially later tonight when “significant” hail is not out of the question, the weather service said.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather for a large part of Alabama today.

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

On Wednesday the threat for severe weather will tick upward, and a Level 3 out of 5 risk has been added for parts of south-central and south Alabama.

Here is the outlook for Wednesday:

There will be a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather Wednesday for the areas in orange.

A Level 3 risk means that numerous severe storms will be possible.

The weather service said the strongest of this week’s weather systems could arrive on Wednesday afternoon, bringing another chance for downed trees and powerlines — and possibly baseball sized hail, the weather service said.

Forecasters added that there could also be a “non-zero tornado threat” for parts of south-central and south Alabama with Wednesday’s storms.

Wednesday’s storms could also be big rainmakers, with up to 5 inches possible for parts of Alabama through Thursday morning.

Additional storms will be possible on Thursday, the weather service said.

The Storm Prediction Center has gone ahead and added a Level 1 risk for severe weather for south Alabama for Thursday, which means that isolated severe storms will be possible:

Additional storms and rain will be possible over the weekend, but so far severe weather isn’t in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
