Woman arrested in Mobile sentenced to 25 years in Mississippi child abuse case

A Mississippi coast woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for felony child abuse after admitting she shook a 5-month-old so violently the child suffered multiple skull fractures and brain bleeds.

The Jackson County (Miss.) District Attorney’s Office announced the plea Monday. Circuit Court Judge Calvin Taylor sentenced 41-year-old Rosa Robichaux to 40 years, with 25 to serve in a Mississippi state prison.

“Rosa Robicheaux violently shook a helpless infant into a state of unconsciousness, verging on death,” said Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath. “By God’s grace this infant is alive and healthy. Our children are our treasures and we remain committed to fight, to protect our children in and out of the courtroom.”

Robicheaux, a Jackson County resident, originally accompanied the child and his mother to a local hospital, but later fled to Alabama. She was arrested days later by Mobile police as she attempted to flee the area on a bus to Iowa.

The case was investigated by the Gautier (Miss.) Police Department.
