Harpersville police: ‘Stalking’ Matthew McConaughey no excuse for speeding

Pulled over for speeding in Alabama’s city of Harpersville? Don’t try to use Matthew McConaughey as an excuse to beat the ticket.

The Harpersville Police Department, known as a longtime “speed trap,” gave fair warning in a light-hearted Facebook post Monday:

“We are aware that Matthew McConaughey is in the Birmingham metro area filming a movie.

“We have discussed it, and while we are empathetic to the plight of you wanting to meet him before he leaves, Harpersville Police officers are NOT taking his short presence in Alabama as an excuse for speeding. It was a tough call, but …the law being the law and all…..

“We wish you happy and safe @officiallymcconaughey stalking.”

Reserve Officer Amy Wagar said no one has yet tried to use the McConaughey excuse, but she won’t be surprised if it pops up.

“You wouldn’t believe some of the hilarious excuses we get sometimes from people talking about why they’re doing whatever they’re doing that’s not correct,’’ said Wagar, who made the post after seeing sightings of the actor pop up in her news feed.

Wagar said she is a fan of McConaughey’s movies but won’t be putting the pedal to the metal herself to hunt him down for an autograph or selfie.

“I know there are a lot of people who love him,’’ Wagar said. “His adoring fans span generations, but my husband is my Matthew McConaughey.”
