Threat increases for severe storms today and tonight
The threat for severe weather has ramped up for Alabama today (Sunday), according to the National Weather Service. And severe weather will be possible on Monday and Tuesday as well.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 3 out of 5 risk — or enhanced risk — for severe weather for the northern half of Alabama today. A Level 3 risk means numerous severe storms will be possible.
But the entire state also will face the threat for severe weather today and tonight.
A Level 2 (or slight risk) will cover most of the southern part of the state, which means that scattered severe storms are possible.
And coastal areas will have a Level 1 risk and could have to deal with isolated severe storms.
Storms today could have winds strong enough to take down trees and power lines, according to forecasters. Expect some to also have large hail and lots of lightning.
There will also be heavy rain — heavy enough to cause some localized flooding.
As for timing: Today’s storms could materialize in two rounds — one this afternoon and one later tonight, according to the weather service.
The extent of this afternoon’s storms is still a bit murky. There could be numerous storms — or there could be very few. If they do form they will have the potential to intensify quickly and become severe.
Then tonight the weather service will be watching for a bigger storm cluster, or mesoscale convective system (MCS), to drop into Alabama from Mississippi and Tennessee. It is expected to push to the southeast and could bring more severe weather into the overnight hours.
The threat will be higher for storms late tonight if there are fewer this afternoon to “contaminate” the atmosphere, according to the weather service.
Storms will again be a possibility on Monday as a front stalls across southern Alabama.
Areas south of that front will again been in an atmosphere favorable for severe weather.
