Watch new doc about Alabama cemetery in the shadows of Bryant-Denny Stadium
As they hurry your way into Bryant-Denny Stadium to make kickoff or even as you stroll across the University of Alabama campus to marvel at all of the latest changes, some Crimson Tide fans may not even notice what lies in the shadows of the south end zone’s exterior: A cemetery filled with tombstones dating back to the 19th century.
At the intersection of Paul W. Bryant Drive and Wade Wallace Avenue, you’ll find a marker and entrance to Evergreen Cemetery, which began as family plots for Tuscaloosa citizens in the 1800s and now serves as the final resting place for Alabama governors, University of Alabama presidents and other local legends near the Capstone.
Scampering up and down the southeast ramp, you likely glanced to see the graveyard just across Bryant Drive from the home of the greatest college football program in sports history, making for one of the most unique gameday settings in the country.
In a new original sports documentary, AL.com explores the history and future of Evergreen Cemetery, which sits across the street from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Watch the doc in the video above.
This is the debut of a monthly short documentary series from AL.com’s sports video team we’re calling “Iron Docs.” Stay tuned for more interesting stories centered on Alabama and Auburn athletics in the near future.
