Severe weather possible in Alabama this weekend

Severe weather possible in Alabama this weekend

Severe thunderstorms will be possible in parts of Alabama on Sunday, and there will be chances for storms throughout next week as well, according to forecasters.

The strongest storms could have damaging winds, hail, lightning and heavy rain. No tornadoes are expected.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather for the northwest corner of Alabama for Sunday. A larger area that incudes the rest of north Alabama and parts of central and west Alabama will have a Level 1 risk on Sunday.

A Level 2 risk means scattered severe storms will be possible. A Level 1 risk means severe storms will also be possible but are expected to be more isolated.

The rest of Alabama could also see rain and storms on Sunday, but the storms are expected to stay below severe limits.

The National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and Huntsville say the prime time for stronger storms will be on Sunday afternoon into Sunday night as a weather system — the first of several — moves through the region.

The weather service said an unsettled weather pattern will last throughout next week, and rain and storms will be possible each day next week.

There’s a chance there could be additional severe storms next week as more disturbances move through, but those details aren’t clear yet, according to forecasters.

As of Friday morning the Storm Prediction Center is only forecasting organized severe weather for Alabama on Sunday, but keep an eye on the forecast because this could change in the coming days.

There will be a marginal risk for severe weather in the areas in green on Sunday.
