South Alabama adds former Baylor safety from portal

South Alabama has added former Baylor safety Mike Harris to its roster for 2023, a source confirmed to AL.com.

Harris, originally from Phenix City, played in 13 games with nine tackles and a fumble recovery as a redshirt freshman for the Bears in 2022. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Harris (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) was a three-star recruit in the 2020 signing class out of Central Phenix City, where he was an all-state pick as a senior. He played in one game at Baylor during the COVID-marred 2020 season before redshirting in 2021.

Harris is the fifth Division I transfer to join the South Alabama program since the end of spring practice, along with fellow safety Wesley Miller (Mississippi State), quarterback Bishop Davenport (Utah State), offensive lineman Lucas Taylor (Mississippi State) and linebacker Gavin Forsha (Kansas State). Harris has not yet announced his commitment to the Jaguars or been added to the team’s online roster, but is enrolled in school and participating in summer workouts.

South Alabama returns four players with starting experience at safety, though Keith Gallmon and Jalen Jordan are fifth-year seniors and Yam Banks and Jaden Voisin are fourth-year juniors. Harris joins a group of younger players that also includes Miller, former Kentucky transfer Rickey Hyatt and 2022 freshman Tremel States-Jones.

South Alabama added four Division I transfers in January: running back Kentrel Bullock (Ole Miss), offensive linemen Reed Buys (Mississippi State) and Jordan Davis (South Carolina) and wide receiver Javon Ivory (Memphis). All participated in spring practice, though Ivory was limited by injury.

The Jaguars, who went 10-3 last season, open the 2023 season at Tulane in a game that kicks off at 7 p.m. and will be nationally televised by ESPNU.

Harris’ addition to the South Alabama program was first reported by JagsJungle.com.
