We’re pleased to announce the launch of QueerVerse, a curated newsletter that highlights the diverse experiences of queer people in the U.S. through joy and resistance — today and throughout history.

As LGBTQ communities reporter and QueerVerse lead writer puts it: “Imagine if Carrie Bradshaw were your fairy trans sister who also worked in gay political news.”

In the deluge of news about LGBTQ communities, QueerVerse will highlight important storylines and other news outside the far-too-often toxic environment of social media. We want this newsletter to bring its readers closer in conversation and community with each other.

You may notice that we’re launching this newsletter during Pride Month.

Yes, that was intentional.

“It’s not an overstatement to say that LGBTQ folks are under assault in America today — from state legislatures and halls of Congress to Twitter feeds and the boardrooms of big-box retailers. QueerVerse will follow stories, but also be a place to highlight how queer communities practice joy and love,” said R.L. Nave, Reckon’s editor-in-chief.

Even though you’ll most often hear from Denny, who will work under the veteran leadership of Michelle Zenarosa, Reckon’s deputy editor, QueerVerse will be a newsroom-wide initiative.

Over the next month, you will also see stories from Reckon reporters covering climate change, kids and families, culture, HBCUs and more. We’ll also take a look back at queer history, answer your questions and honor the memories of trans people stolen by violence.

“With our new newsletter, we’re embarking on a groundbreaking journey to illuminate the multiverse of LGBTQ+ issues from unique perspectives, amplifying the voices that have been silenced for far too long,” Zenarosa said.

“Our goal with our reporting, especially Denny’s ongoing series commemorating trans lives lost to violence, When You Were Here, is to redefine news coverage by putting the lived experiences and challenges of queer and trans folks at the heart of our reporting.”
