An Ensley church caught fire Monday night, sending heavy smoke and flames throughout the structure on Avenue S, officials said.

Firefighters responded to a large commercial fire in the 2700 bock of Avenue S, according to the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke billowing out of the church.

As crews began to douse the flames with water, the conditions of the blaze changed and heavy fire began emanating from the roof of the church.

It took several hours for the fire to be put out.

No injuries were reported.

Crews are remaining at the scene overnight “to make sure the structure does not reignite,” the BFRS said.

Seven engines, one truck, two quints, one squad, one rescue responded to the fire along with a safety officer, two battalions, one assistant chief and a public information officer.

The fire remained under investigation Friday night.
