Tim Brando says Finebaum scared of Greg Sankey, blasts SEC commish over 8-league game schedule
Tim Brando sounded off Monday on SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum and the league’s 2024 eight game-conference schedule.
Brando, in an interview with Crain & Company, took a shot at Sankey because he didn’t move ahead with a nine-game conference schedule at the SEC spring meetings in Destin.
“He did not look like a commissioner last week in Destin,” Brando said. “Look, if you’re telling me this guy’s the most powerful man in college football, I have great expectations. And Greg Sankey is a good man. He wants to play 9 games, but he won’t even say it publicly. He wanted nine games, and everybody knew it.”

Finebaum was also in the line of fire as Brando accused “The Mouth of the South” of not calling Sankey on the issues.
“I couldn’t get over the frothing at the mouth that was going on Finebaum’s show, because Paul couldn’t ask the direct questions either for fear his Bat-phone was going to ring,” said Brando. “So he’s asking all these guys from websites to tell him what he already knew. And that is the SEC presidents had their hand out wanting more money from ESPN. Why should ESPN pay them more money? They have a $300 million deal… Are you kidding me? Here’s what happened and no one wants to say this: He made that television deal too early.”
Last week the SEC announced a temporary solution to a 16-team league with the eight-game plan beating the nine-game model. Exact details are not yet public, but there will be a June 14 schedule unveiling at primetime on the SEC Network.
