Sheriff: 2 teens tried to buy meth at Pensacola homeless camp. 1 killed, other charged with murder

Two 16-year-olds armed with handguns went into a Pensacola homeless camp to buy methamphetamine, but one ended up dead and the other charged with his murder, even though he didn’t fire the fatal shot.

The Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office said the incident took place May 26 at a homeless camp on Murphy Lane in Pensacola.

Deputies responded to a report of shots fired and found one of the teenagers with a gunshot wound. He later died at a local hospital.

In the days that followed, investigators learned the two teens, after arriving armed at the camp, were told no one had any meth to sell. They then pointed their guns at two people, threatening to steal their belongings.

Another male entered the situation and the two teenagers pointed their guns at him. The third male pulled out a weapon and the exchange of gunfire ensued, according to the ECSO.

Investigators determined the third, unidentified male acted in self-defense, with that element of the investigation ruled as a “stand your ground” situation under Florida law.

However, because the two 16-year-olds committed aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resulting in the death of one of the teens, his accomplice — Calvin Spurlock Jr. — was arrested Friday and charged with third degree felony murder.

Spurlock is additionally charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of deadly missiles, and carrying a firearm.

In Florida, shooting or throwing a deadly missile is the projection of a dangerous object at a building, vehicle, or vessel with wanton or malicious intent.

Spurlock is being held at the Escambia Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
