Yelp ranked the country’s Top 100 burgers. Alabama came up short

Imagine Yelp rated the top 100 burgers in the country, and not only did your favorite Alabama spot not make the list, not a single home-grown burger joint in the state did either.

Yeah, that just happened.

For some, this will add insult to injury: The only Top 100 burger in Alabama comes from a vegan chain.

This grim scenario comes to us courtesy of Yelp.com, which recently celebrated National Burger Day (May 28) by giving us a list of “Yelp’s Top 100 Burgers in America.” It’s an occasionally weird but largely mouth-watering compilation, representing such ostensible trends as barbecue burgers (yum), extra-large burgers (sign us up), Asian influences (sushi burgers? Really?) and alternatives to buns (French puff pastry, tortillas, whatever).

Yeah, not a single Alabama burger was deemed worthy. We can’t even say it’s anti-Southern bias. Mississippi also got skunked but Tennessee had two places on the list, Florida had five, Georgia had four. And it was one of the Georgia entries that gave Alabama its only taste of greatness, according to Yelp.

One of the big trends exposed in the ranking, the writers say, is that plant-based burgers are bigger than ever.

Slutty Vegan, the Atlanta-based vegan chain with a branch in the Birmingham area, got a big spotlight at No. 3:

This Black-owned, women-led hotspot draws vegans and carnivores alike for its menu of plant-based burgers and dancehall party atmosphere. The burgers are saucy (all include the restaurant’s special “Slut Sauce”)—and so are their names. In the mood for a Ménage à Trois? The jaw-defying threesome of a vegan patty, vegan bacon, and vegan shrimp, served on a vegan Hawaiian bun, “was everything I hoped it would be,” says Yelp Elite Jocelyn G. Feel like a Super Slut? The zesty combo features toppings such as guacamole and jalapeno. Not in the mood for a burger? Try the Hollywood Hooker, a Philly-style hoagie with thinly sliced vegan beef and vegan provolone, or the Big Dawg, a bangin’ vegan bratwurst on a pretzel bun with sauerkraut. All come with Slutty Fries tossed in Slut Dust, their unique, paprika-heavy seasoning blend.

Slutty Vegan’s “One Night Stand” is described as “the closest you’ll get to a typical burger at the chain,” says the report.

Not your thing? The top-ranked burger also can be found in Atlanta, at Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q.

Featuring “a hefty helping of chopped Angus beef brisket, along with peppery bacon, melted house-made pimento cheese, jalapeno mayo, tomato, red onion, and pickles on a toasted brioche bun.” The restaurant has received nearly 2,500 five-star reviews.
