Saraland star QB KJ Lacey commits to Texas

Alabama Class 6A state championship quarterback KJ Lacey committed to the University of Texas on Saturday during a trip to the Austin campus. The rising junior who helped Saraland to its first state championship in 2022 had narrowed his choices to nine teams in a tweet on Friday.

Lacey proclaimed on Twitter, “Hook’Em 1000% committed.”

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder had listed the Longhorns among his finalists on Twitter on Friday with both Alabama and Auburn making the cut, along with Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Oregon.

Lacey is a four-star prospect according to all the major recruiting services. On3 reports that he has 30 offers headed into his junior season. Power 5 teams on that list also included Florida State, Notre Dame, Miami, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, TCU, Michigan State, West Virginia and Colorado.

The state championship quarterback passed for 40 touchdowns and ran for four more. He completed 200-of-314 throws – 64 percent – for 3,176 yards.

Lacey was selected as the QB on the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 6A All-State team.

Saraland finished 14-1 in 2022, beating Mountain Brook 38-17 for the title.

Lacey’s top target, fellow rising junior Ryan Williams, was named the ASWA’s Mr. Football and 6A Back of the Year. Williams, a University of Alabama commitment, was the first sophomore to earn the award after catching 88 passes for 1,641 yards and rushing for 700 yards and 15 TDs on 57 attempts. He also threw for a touchdown and had two punt returns for scores.
