Woman’s burned body discovered in wooded area of east Birmingham

Birmingham police are investigating a homicide after authorities said they found the burned body of a woman Thursday night in a wooded area of east Birmingham.

Officers received a report of a burned body in the 200 block of Sellers Road around 9 p.m. Thursday, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Officers and Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service personnel arrived on the scene to discover the body of what police believe is an adult female. BFRS personnel extinguished the flames.

“Right now our officers have observed signs of trauma on the victim,” said Fitzgerald. “We are currently investigating this case as a homicide.”

Police did not yet know whether the woman was killed before or after she was burned, but Fitzgerald said an autopsy will uncover more information about the victim’s death.

There are no suspects in custody.

Anyone in the area who observed or heard anything unusual was asked to call police or CrimeStoppers at 205-254-7777.
