Nick Saban, Greg Sankey among SEC contingent headed to Washington on NIL lobbying trip

Alabama’s Nick Saban and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey are among a group of SEC coaches, university presidents and athletic director headed to Washington to meet with lawmakers next week, according to The Associated.

The goal is get federal assistance in regulating how college athletes can earn money off their name, image and likeness.

The SEC confirmed the trip to The AP at the end of the league’s spring meetings in Destin on Thursday.

“There’s a lot that goes on between our campuses and D.C.,” Sankey told The AP. “And so this is an opportunity to focus on athletics and some of the pressures that we’re facing. To communicate that, given the realities in college athletics, Congress is the place that can fix the issues we have.”

According to the report, the SEC will host lawmakers and congressional staffers on Wednesday at a reception before visiting with representatives and senators the following day.

The SEC is expected to have number of coaches across several sports to attend, but Saban is clearly the headliner.

“They’re on one piece of the front line,” Sankey told The AP. “They’re dealing with their teams, with young people involved in those teams. They’re involved in the culture of transfers, both in and out. And I think they can have the opportunity to contextualize what’s happening within college athletics right now.”
