Texas man killed at Gardendale hotel remembered as ‘kind, honest, hardworking’

A 29-year-old Texas man killed at an Alabama hotel is being remembered as kind, honest and hardworking.

Julio Acosta Garcia, 25, was killed in the predawn hours of Memorial Day at the Best Western in Gardendale. Police said his co-worker was arrested in Mississippi but have not yet identified him or announced formal charges.

“He was tragically taken too soon and unfairly,’’ family said in a GoFundMe to help with Garcia’s burial. “We are trying to raise enough money to have a funeral for him and to be able to transport his body back to his hometown in Mexico.”

The deadly fight happened before 1 a.m. Monday at the hotel in the 800 of Thompson Street. Family members say they don’t know why Garcia was killed.

According to police, the co-workers were from out of state and staying at the hotel when they got into a dispute. The suspect pulled a gun, shot Garcia while they were in the parking lot, and then fled.

Garcia was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officers and detectives quickly identified the suspect. A lookout bulletin was issued over Birmingham area police radios; however, the suspect was captured by Tupelo police officers in Mississippi.
