29-year-old identified as man shot to death inside Birmingham residence

A man shot to death Wednesday afternoon in Woodlawn has now been identified.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the victim as Anthony James Embry. He was 29.

The city’s East Precinct officers responded about 2 p.m. to a triplex in the 900 block of 52nd Way North on a report of multiple shots fired.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Embry inside one of the units dead from a gunshot wound, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Police said there were limited details available about the deadly shooting.

“We know there were occupants inside of the triplex,’’ Fitzgerald said. “Shots were fired. The victim was struck by gunfire, and we do not have anyone in custody.”

He said the neighborhood is heavily populated and they are hoping to get additional information from residents.

“Everybody knows everybody,’’ he said. “So, we’re going to tap into that resource.”

Embry is Birmingham’s 54th homicide victim this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and at least two others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 77 homicides in 2023, including the 54 in Birmingham.
