More than 30 vehicles were burglarized early Tuesday in the parking lots of Amazon and FedEx in Bessemer.

The break-ins happened between midnight and 3 a.m. Tuesday at the FedEx Distribution Center on Lakeshore Parkway and the Amazon distribution site on Powder Plant Road, said Bessemer police Lt. Christian Clemons.

According to Clemons, a few of the vehicles had been left unlocked, but a majority sustained broken windows.

Items stolen from the targeted vehicles included cash, debit cards, credit cards, purses, guns, cell phones and tablets.

It’s not the first time the businesses have been hit locally or nationwide. Parking lots at large business and apartment complexes with a high number of vehicles overnight are popular targets for opportunistic thieves.

Last year, dozens of cars were burglarized at the FedEx Distribution Center in Bessemer.

“We are working to solve these cases,’’ Clemons said, “and know that we have been targeted before, as well as other metro jurisdictions.”

The suspect or suspects in the Tuesday morning incidents are believed to have been in a light-colored Dodge Charger.
