Recruiting Roundup: Alabama commits set official visits to Auburn

A pair of longtime Alabama in-state commits have set up official visits to rival Auburn in June.

Foley wide receiver Perry Thompson reported on social media that he will visit the Tigers June 16-18. Clay-Chalkville athlete/defensive back Jaylen Mbakwe told On3 on Tuesday that he would visit Auburn this weekend.

Both, however, have told AL.com in recent weeks they are still firmly committed to the Crimson Tide.

Mbakwe is the top-ranked rising senior recruit in Alabama, according to the 247 composite rankings. Thompson is No. 3 on that list.

The 6-foot-1, 171-pound Mbakwe committed to the Crimson Tide last July and earlier this spring announced he was shutting down his recruitment.

“I feel like it was just time – time to focus on everything and get ready for my senior season,” Mbakwe told AL.com last month. “I just want to have fun and just get this thing back to a state championship.”

He told On3 Tuesday that he would go to his Auburn visit with an “open mind” but is still “100 percent” committed to Alabama.

Clay-Chakville head coach Drew Gilmer told AL.com in April that Mbakwe is an “NFL corner.”

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Thompson committed to Alabama last June. He went on to have a spectacular junior season for the Lions, catching 87 passes for 1,059 yards and 9 touchdowns for the 7A, Region 1 champs. He also had a pair of interceptions on defense.

His decision to visit Auburn again isn’t surprising. He told AL.com last month that he would likely visit the Tigers and maybe Tennessee this summer.
