Decatur schools investigating physical altercation between bus driver, parent

Decatur City School officials are investigating an incident Wednesday afternoon which reportedly involved a physical altercation between a parent and a bus driver.

Deputy Superintendent Dwight Satterfield said in a video message an “isolated incident” happened about 3 p.m. on bus 2823 during a neighborhood stop to release students.

According to Satterfield, as the bus driver was talking to students about their behavior, an unknown driver made an illegal pass on the left side while the bus flag was out.

The driver attempted to record the license plate of the vehicle, when a parent approached the bus.

Satterfield said the parent made accusations against the driver that are “unproven,” though he did not say what they were. Then the driver prevented the parent from illegally entering the bus. Permission is required from a driver or a school official to enter a bus, Satterfield said.

The altercation, while verbal and “somewhat physical,” did not involve a weapon, he said. School officials are working with Decatur police.

No students were threatened during the incident, he said.
