These 13 Jefferson County pools earned perfect scores in time for Memorial Day weekend
It’s Memorial Day weekend, and that means it time to take off the grill cover and get into the pool.
While you’ve been preparing your beach vacation itinerary and buying packs of hot dogs, the inspectors at the Jefferson County Health Department have been planning for the holiday weekend by evaluating public pools.
More than 30 pools have been inspected by the agency in May.
A baker’s dozen earned a perfect score of 100. Among the immaculate pools include several at Splash Adventure in Bessemer, the leisure and competition pools at the Vestavia Hills Aquatic Complex and the spa and main pools at the UAB Recreation Center.
AL.com is only listing pools available to the public, so condos or apartment complexes are excluded.
Unlike restaurants, the Jefferson County Health Department does not have passing or failing scores for pools, but serious infractions can cause a pool to be shut down until issues are corrected.
There are nine reasons why the department will close down a pool:
· Failure to maintain proper chlorine and pH levels
· Inadequate fencing or a gate that does not self-close and latch
· The fill spout is installed in a manner/location that is considered a trip hazard
· The pool water is cloudy or discolored so as to prevent the ability to see the pool bottom
· Life-saving equipment is not present and accessible
· The main drain cover is either not secure or intact
· Pumps and filters are not operating properly
· The disinfectant feeder is not operating properly
· An electrical line or other electrical hazard crossing or in the pool/deck area
Inspectors will give a re-inspection once they are notified by the property manager or pool owner that they’ve fixed an infraction.
