There have been 674 mass shootings since the Robb Elementary School Shooting

Wednesday marks the one-year anniversary of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 children and two teachers dead. 17 others were shot or wounded.

Within that time frame, advocates say little has been done to reduce the number of gun violence incidents.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 674 mass shootings since May 2022 and 50 mass murders. Of those, 50 mass shootings occurred in Texas. The Gun Violence Archive defines mass shootings as four or more victims shot or killed, not including the shooter. Mass murders involve four or more victims killed, not including the shooter.

“We get truckloads of thoughts and prayers and they all go to a warehouse somewhere,” said Mark Bryant, the organization’s executive director. “Nothing has changed.”

In a press release, Everytown for Gun Safety praised President Joe Biden for signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a piece of legislation that makes it harder for people under 21 to acquire guns. The bill became law in June.

“The pain and perseverance shown by survivors of the shooting at Robb Elementary helped push Congress to pass the first major gun safety bill in 30 years and they continue inspiring our work to forge a safer future,” John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said.

The act also increases funding for school safety measures and mental health initiatives. Earlier this month, Biden described the bill’s enactment as a success while pressing Congress to pass an assault weapons ban.

“I have already taken more meaningful executive action to reduce gun violence than any other president,” Biden wrote in a USA Today op-ed. “But my power is not absolute.”

In Texas, legislation has stalled. Just days before the one-year anniversary of the Robb Elementary School shooting, lawmakers rejected House Bill 2744, legislation that would’ve raised the age to purchase certain semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21.

The man who committed the attack was 18 years old.

“Even in the wild, wild west they had rules,” Bryant said. “Now we don’t have rules.”

In fact, some states have tried to make it easier to obtain firearms or carry them on school grounds. In Tennessee, lawmakers introduced a bill that would allow teachers to carry guns on school grounds months before the Covenant School Shooting.

The legislation still hasn’t made it out of committee. Last month, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that would allow anyone to carry concealed weapons in most spaces without a permit. The law takes effect July 1.

Bryant wonders if efforts to reduce gun violence can be accomplished through legislation.

“With the polarization that we have now?” he said. “I don’t think so.”
