Pair charged with trying to smuggle contraband into Alabama prison

Two people are under arrest, accused of trying to smuggle contraband into an Alabama prison.

The Alabama Department of Corrections on Wednesday announced charges against Kathryn Kelli Washington, 27, and Jadarius Daniel, 28. Both are from Tuskegee, and are charged with promoting prison contraband.

Early Saturday, prison authorities said, a trespassing vehicle was reported on the property at Elmore Correctional Facility in Elmore County.

Officers with ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division, along with the department’s K-9 Bureau, responded and stopped a vehicle that was leaving the area.

The K-9 indicated something amiss with a large, red cooler bag in the back seat. That led to a search of the bag in which investigators found four packages of illegal contraband.

Prison officials did not identify the contents of the cooler bag.

Washington, the driver, and Daniel, her passenger, were taken into custody.

Daniel remains in the Elmore Count Jail on $15,000 bond. Washington was released from the jail Monday after posting bond.
