Body found in burning Birmingham house was victim of homicide, police say

A body found inside a burning Birmingham house Monday night was the victim of a homicide, police announced Tuesday.

The victim has not yet been identified, but an autopsy by Jefferson County Medical Examiner/Coroner’s Office determined he or she had been shot, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Just before 7 p.m. Monday, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and the city’s North Precinct officers were dispatched to the 4000 Block of Old Lewisburg Road on report of a house fire.

They arrived on the scene to find the house engulfed in flames.

Once the blaze was extinguished, firefighters found the unresponsive victim inside.

Police officials quickly said the fire was deemed suspicious, which was confirmed by the autopsy results.

Fitzgerald said detectives are looking into whether the house was abandoned or occupied.

The victim’s death marks Birmingham’s 50th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and two others have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County this year, there have been 62 homicides, including the 50 in Birmingham.
