Alabama freshman football player to receive probation after drug arrest

Alabama freshman defensive back Tony Mitchell will plea “no contest” Wednesday in a Florida court on a felony marijuana possession charge.

Mitchell, who was arrested March 15 in Holmes County, will receive probation and drug counseling, his attorney Waylon Graham told AL.com on Tuesday.

Mitchell had initially entered a written not guilty plea for the charge. The former star player at Thompson High School in Alabaster has been suspended indefinitely by Alabama since the arrest, which came during spring break and shortly before the Tide began spring practice.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said at his Nick’s Kids charity golf tournament Tuesday morning that he did not yet have an update to provide on Mitchell’s status. Alabama players will return to campus this summer and begin fall camp in early August.

Graham told AL.com’s Nick Alvarez earlier this month that Mitchell could enter one of the university’s drug counseling programs as part of the school’s internal discipline process.

Mitchell and his passenger, Christophere Lewis of Valley Grande, were stopped by a Holmes County sheriff’s deputy and arrested after 226 grams of marijuana were found in Mitchell’s car — along with about $7,000 in cash, a scale and a loaded gun.

Both men faced felony charges of possession of marijuana with intent to sell, and Lewis additionally faced a firearm possession without a permit charge. Because Lewis failed to appear at his pre-trial hearing on May 3 and a lawyer did not represent him in his place, a warrant has been issued for Lewis’ arrest, an individual with knowledge of the case told AL.com’s Nick Alvarez.

The police report stated Mitchell drove his Dodge Challenger 141 mph and evaded police before later being found and stopped. Police body camera footage showed Mitchell initially denying he fled before later admitting to speeding away. Mitchell identified himself as an Alabama football player to police and denied possession of the marijuana and the gun. Lewis also denied possession to police.

“Everybody’s got an opportunity to make choices and decisions,” Nick Saban said after the arrest. “There’s no such thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Mitchell was ranked as high as No. 10 among all prospects nationally in the 2023 class in 247 Sports’ industry composite as a high school junior but fell to No. 123 by February’s final ranking, when Mitchell had enrolled early at Alabama.
