California man helping ducks cross street struck and killed by vehicle

A man who helped a family of ducks cross a busy street was killed when he was struck by a vehicle.

Casey Rivara, 41, died at the scene after he was hit by a vehicle driven by a teen, according to a news release from the Rocklin Police Department. The teen remained at the scene and police say the driver is unlikely to face charges.

According to police, Rivara parked his vehicle near an intersection at about 8:15 p.m. on May 18 and got out in an attempt to help a family of ducks get across the street safely. Shortly after the ducks crossed, the vehicle struck Rivara, who was still on the street, police say.

ABC 10 reports a memorial at the scene of the incident has been growing. A 12-year-old witness tells KCRA Channel 3 that other motorists were clapping and telling Rivara “Good job” moments before the man was struck.

“He was the only person to get out of the car and try and help them and probably the nicest person in the entire area. It’s not fair,” the witness, named William, tells KCRA.

A gofundme page established for Rivara says he was driving his two children, ages 6 and 11, home from swim practice when he stopped to help the ducks.

“Casey was the kindest, most amazing husband and father,” the gofundme page says. “Even his last act in this world was a sign of his compassion.”
