1 killed, 1 injured when WaveRunner leaves east Alabama lake, crashes into tree

A Georgia 19-year-old was killed in a WaveRunner crash on an east Alabama lake over the weekend.

Alabama State Troopers identified the fatality victim as Daegen P. Vaughn. He lived in Summerville.

The crash happened about 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the Yellow Creek area of Weiss Lake near Cedar Bluff in Cherokee County, said Trooper Sgt. Jeremy Burkett.

Authorities said Vaughn was operating the 2021 Yamaha WaveRunner when he ran up on land and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

His passenger, 22-year-old Mason D. Sterner, also of Summerville, was taken to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga. The extent of his injuries was not immediately made available.

Burkett said both men were wearing personal flotation devices at the time of the crash.

The Sand Rock Volunteer Fire Department, Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Leesburg Police Department, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Floyd Ambulance Service, and ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division responded and assisted with the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
